Mind training procedures

The Well trained mind brings happiness

Mind Monitoring Method (MP3)

1.  Take a deep breath, relax, rest your hands, palms up on your thighs, near the top of your knees. Take a deep breath again, slowly lift two fingers of your right hand to touch the center of your chest near xiphoid process. This is the base of your mind. It feels like a throbbing heart, “thump, thump”. Sometimes it seems weaker, sometimes stronger. If you feel nothing there, take note of it.

2. Now that we located the mind’s base, slowly take your fingers off. Slowly raise both your hands up half way, palms facing each other. Keep in touch with the feelings on your hands. There will be some energy on them.  Keep observing the feelings at the center of your chest and the senses on your hands.  Slowly and repeatedly move your palms toward each other, in and out. It will feel like a magnetic pull, as if there are magnets on your hands.

Keep in touch with the feelings on the center of your chest. Let us pause for a second, direct all your energy waves to your hands. You will feel a dense wave of energy, heavy, and warm, like there is a ball of something there. Let us move our hands in and out.

3. Now, stop moving your hands for a second. Inhale deeply. Keep focusing on the center of your chest. Slowly turn your hands, palms up, and lay them on your thighs. Let us learn how to send and recieve energy waves.

4. Pair up. One of you, as a reciever, please turn your palms up, the other, as a sender, turn them down, above the reciever’s. Without actually voicing it, the sender please say, “ Be happy ”, from the center of your chest.

Senders, slowly move your hands up and down. Keep in touch with the senses on the center of your chest, as well as on your hands. Senders, move your hands in circles. Receivers, continue to inform the senders how you feel.

Now, Senders, pause your hands for a second. Move your hands to the sides, and slowly put them down.  Take a deep, long breath until it seems to reach your brain. Direct your senses to the center of your chest near xiphoid process. Lift your hands up half way, palms up. We will now learn to convey our loving compassion, call “Metta Apamanya”.

 5. Let the energy waves radiate from your body. Expand them to cover the area where we are, then the entire province, then all over the country.  Expand the waves out to cover all over the world, and the universe, without constraint. We will continue to feel peaceful inside.

When we obtain merit from practicing Dharma; without saying it out loud, set your mind at the center of your chest. Think silently,

“With our merit,

we, the Thai King’s subjects  who have practiced  the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and the Noble Eightfold Path, dedicate this merit to our fathers, mothers,  siblings, close relatives,  beloved friends, teachers, our beloved Princess Mother, Their Majesties the King and Queen Sirikit, All the royalties,

Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti,  Princess Galayani Wattana Krom Luang  Naratiwat Rajanakarin (the King’s sister),

God Indra, the Governing Gods of the Quad Planes,Gods and Goddesses of the Earth, Streams, Wind, Rain, Crops, and Govering Gods of all ten directions,

Former Kings who became Thailand’s Protectors  so our future generations have a place to reside.  May this merit reach the Thai King’s subjects, and enable them to be happy.  May they be happy.”

Before you leave the sitting pose, your eyes are still closed. Before opening them, set your mind at the center of your chest, and say, without voicing it, that you will go back. Draw in a deep, long breath that seems to go to your brain. Slowly rest all your senses on the center of your chest near xiphoid process; no need to rush.

Slowly take a deep breath once more. Slowly relax the senses to the center of your chest. Slowly take a deep, long breath for the last time, and open your eyes, cast them down, and relax.

When casting your eyes down, rest your senses on the center of your chest, near xiphoid process.  Do this all day and all night. This means, it can always be done, with our eyes closed and open.   Whatever you do, standing, walking, sitting, sleeping, taking a bath,no matter what posture you are in, you can observe your mind all day and all night.

When one continues to see his mind’s rise and fall inside, his mind will forever be his own dependable anchorage.
